the bindings

The Dunwich Horror will be issued in three states. All will be sewn and bound by hand, with the aquatints incorporated (i.e. sewn with) the text sheets. All will be quarter bindings, with boards covered in original etchings created by Briony and printed in metallic ink over sheets of Reg Lissel’s handmade paper painted black.

The first 5 copies (and 3 A.P.) will contain all eight prints created for the project by Briony, and be bound with decorated endpapers by Claudia Cohen (who also bound both versions of Iskandariya). The text sheets and aquatints will be sewn on vellum slips, and then laced into a case made with a vellum spine. These copies will be issued in a cloth-covered clamshell box, accompanied by a portfolio containing a first-state proof (i.e. the etching before aquatint is applied) of each print included in the book. A second portfolio in the box will contain copies of the aquatints printed on vintage Royal Watercolour Society handmade paper, each one fully painted and signed by the artist.

The rest of the edition will be sewn and bound at HM in quarter Japanese cloth with Briony’s etchings over boards. The images on this page are of a rough mock-up, using a digital sketch she created for the cover etchings. We won’t have an actual bound copy to show until all the text and intaglio printing are completed (June?).

Copies 6 – 20 will contain the project’s eight prints, and the endpapers will be specially painted for the project. Each copy will be issued in a clamshell box, accompanied by a portfolio of first-state proofs of the eight prints.

Copies 21 – 50 will contain 5 prints and be issued in a slipcase.
